What EDT means for your diary

Essential Driver Training is the set of 12 one-hour lessons that learner permit holders take with an ADI before the driving test. If you teach full time, you probably have a dozen or more learners at once, each on a different lesson, each with a different permit date.

Knowing who is on lesson 3 and who needs two more hours is the kind of detail that is easy to hold in your head with five students and almost impossible with fifteen.

Where spreadsheets and paper diaries fall down

• The count lives in two places, your diary and the learner's logbook, and they drift apart.
• A learner who started with another instructor arrives with hours you never saw.
• You cannot see at a glance which learners are close to finishing and which have stalled.
• When a learner asks "how many have I done?", you have to go and look it up.
